Magnificent skating
The outstanding dance pair, Janna Greene (Christchurch) and Alan Wild (Auckland), have been given permission to attend the world artistic ice-skating championships in Tokyo next March.
The New Zealand IceSkating Council’s decision was announced at the conclusion of the national championships at Christchurch during the week-end by the president of the N.Z.I.S.A. (Mr Dan Mellamphy).
Wild and Miss Greene were in magnificent form during the championships and showed a standard of dancing never reached in New Zealand before. A number of Australians finished first in their events but omy New Zealanders are eligible to take the titles.
One of the visitors, Miss Colleen Jamieson, continued
on her winning way, delighting the audience with an outstanding artistic ability seldom seen in the intermediate grade. The Aucklander, Carol Williams, who took the over-all title, showed the benefit of experience as a member of the New Zealand team in Brisbane earlier this month. Another Australian visitor, Brian Meek (Sydney), capti 3 vated all present, including the judges, with his selection of double jumps and spins.
Miss Julie Clark and Grant Walker gave a competent exhibition of senior pairs skating to overtake the reigning champions, a brother and sister combination of Alan and Anne Brennock, also the runners-up in the dancing. Margaret Doolan (Australia) gave a polished performance in the senior
women’s event but unfortum ately there were no othej competitors. Results were:— Senior Men.—Over-all: B. Meek (Australia) 1, R. Bates (Auckland) 2, G. Walker (Christchurch) 3, J.
