Coke breeze soon aboard

The first venture by Lyttelton watersiders into slevedoring passed off smoothly on Thursday when, the last truck-load of a 6000-tonne shipment of coke breeze reached the hold of the bulk carrier Timber Pioneer.

Within about 24 hours of her arrival in ballast from Australia, the Timber Pioneer had filled both her hatches with coke breeze and was under way again for Korea.

The supervisor of the operation, the secretary of the Lyttelton Watersiders’ Union (Mr M. E. Foster) said that only a few minor hitches had been experienced with the bulk loader.

Loading had begun at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and was all but completed in two shifts, he said. The stevedoring was carried out by the Express Stevedoring Company, a recently formed company owned entirely by the union.

The coke breeze, a lowgrade coke produced by the Christchurch Gas Company, Ltd, will be used as a sintering agent by Korean steel manufacturers.

A second shipment of about the same size is due to be shipped from Lyttelton on September 3. The tender for this shipment is still under negotiation.
