Catholic burial for Haw Haw
NZPA-Reuter London The remains of the World War Two traitor, William Joyce, known as Lord Haw Haw because of the propaganda broadcasts he made for the Nazis, is being flown to Ireland lor reburial. The British Home Secretary (Mr Roy Jenkins) this week gave permission for Joyce’s family to move his remains trom London s Wandsworth Prison to Galway. Ireland, where Joyce wanted to be buried. Joyce was hanged at Wandsworth on January 3, 1946. after he had been convicted of treason. He was buried in unconsecrated ground. His daughter. Heathet landolo, aged 48. flew to Galway, where Joyce spent much of his childhood, to arrange a Roman Catholic funeral scheduled for earlj next week. The exact time and date have been kept secret, apparently to avoid trouble. Joyce first gained notoriety before the war as a prominent member of Sit Oswald Mosley’s British Fascist Party. He fled to Nazi Germany a few days be, fore war broke out in Sep. tember, 1939. He was appointed an editor and announcer with Hitler’s Propaganda Ministry, and made countless broadcasts beamed at Britain.
His drawling style quickly [earned him the nickname I Haw Haw. His broadcasts ! always began: “Germany [calling—Germany calling.”
