Labour Party membership
Sir, — In a recent statement. Mr Faulkner, a former Labour Minister, spoke of the unprecedented growth in his party’s membership. He stated that the membership figure did not include the 200,000 members of unions affiliated to the party. As a member of the Engineers’ Union and a Social Credit candidate, I strongly object to the inference that I support the Labour Party or by some peculiar mode of reasoning am actually counted amongst its members. I belong to my union because I believe in the democratic right of any group to organise in order to protect their own interests. I also object to part of my membership fee going to the Labour Party fighting . fund but under the union’s constitution, I must accept this, appear before a committee, or resign, which action would only embarrass my employers who under the “unqualified preference clause” would be forced to dismiss me. — Yours, etc., P. NORMAN DAVEY. August 20, 1976.
