South Africa and rugby

Sir.—Mr Ordia accuses the New Zealand Government of treating him like a common criminal In fact. Mr Ordia amved in New Zealand with-

out a visa but as a matter of courtesy was permitted to enter the country. 1 question whether a person of known pro-apartheid views would be extended the same courtesy by the Nigerian Government. Most of the governments in Africa supporting Mr Ordia’s position came to power by washing their hands in the blood of their fellow countrymen and stay in power by the same means. I challenge Mr Ordia’s right to criticise our freely elected Government and suggest that his energies be directed to creating nonracist democratic societies in the countries he claims to represent.—Yours, etc.,

NEVILLE YOUNG. August 20, 1976.

Sir, —With no thought of monetary reward and in expectation of the glad day when a multi-racial, selected-on-merit, genuinely national rugby team represents South Africa internationally, for consideration by Dr Danie Craven, as a symbol, which will stand above those already in use — the Springboks’, the Leopards, and the Proteas — that animal which science is still undecided is a white animal with black stripes or a black animal with white stripes, I suggest — the Zebras.—Yours, etc., M. CREEL. August 20, 1976.
