‘Bid to split trade unions’

The Canterbury Trades Council is concerned about present actions which it sees as “a concerted attack designed to split the trade-union movement.” The council decided last evening to recommend to the national executive of the Federation of Labour that it set up a committee to co-ordinate and take effective action in support of any union under attack. The council was conconcerned about the attack,

particularly allegations that some unions have “certain political affiliations.” The council said recent amendments to the Industrial Relations Act enabling employers to suspend non-striking workers were an indication of the attack. The council will request unions in Canterbury to contact the council when any members are suspended because of a stoppage by other workers.
