Ski titles decided

Julian Morris and Jonelle Mills won the South Island ski-ing titles at the Craigiebum Valley Ski Club at the week-end. Miss Mills won the giant slalom yesterday and was third in the slalom on Saturday, while Morris was second in both the slalom and the giant slalom. The New Zealand Olympic representative. Robin Armstrong, was first in the slalom, but it was a very dose contest with only O.lTsec separating the first three place-getters — the closest placing for any New Zealand ski race. Armstrong’s total for two runs was only three hundredths of a second faster than Morris’s total for the same runs. Jeremy Light finished o.l4sec behind Morris over two runs. Fiona Johnson had a comfortable lead in the slalom of 2.9 sec but in the giant slalom she missed a gate at the end of the course and ruined her chances of taking the title. Brett Kendall, a team-mate of Armstrong at the winter Olympics, easily won the giant slalom. His total for the two runs was more than ssec ahead of the second place-getter, Morris. Kendall's second run was a superb effort. He attacked the course and finished almost 4sec clear of his nearest rival, Morris. Anna Archibald, the national women’s champion, could only manage fourth place in the giant slalom.
