Top pilot crashes to death

PA Wellington A top Wellington hangglider pilot, Richard Fogel, plunged to his death while practising a steep stall turn above Paekakariki on Saturday. Mr Fogel, aged 25, crashed more than 60 metres on to a bracken-covered cliff face near the town’s scenic hill look-out. He was alive when ambulance and police rescuers reached him but died later. Mr Fogel, who was the Wellington Hang Gliding Association’s safety officer, was using a new overseasdesigned glider in winds of 50km/h when the accident happened. Two ambulances, including a special emergency tender, went to the scene. Fogel’s gliding partner, Mr Pat Duncan, said yesterday the crashed glider was a new high-performance one built in New Zealand to an overseas design.
