Overseer resigns from union

The overseer tor the Eyre County Council (Mr W. K. Bailie) has had to resign from the Drivers’ Union because the union said that he could not act as overseer and a driver at the same time. Mr Bailie’s resignation came after a visit from a union official who threatened industrial action if the situation was not resolved. The Eyre County Clerk (Mr L. Southon) said at a council meeting that he had referred the matter to the Employers’ Association for a ruling. It appeared that the union was correct, and that Mr Baillie had to resign. Mr Southon said that as a member of the Drivers' Union Mr Baillie had sometimes been called out to work an occasional day on a dragline or other machinery. The union said that while he was away driving there was no-one to supervise the men at work. The only time Mr Bailie could drive was when he had asked his men if anyone wanted to do the job, or when he was training someone to work the machinery. Mr Baillie will join the Local Bodies Officers’ (other than clerical) Union.
