Subsidy cut ‘breach of faith'

Government cuts in subsidies paid to farmers for water schemes in North Canterbury were described as a “breach of faith” by the provincial executive board of North Canterbury Federated Farmers. The board unanimously approved a remit opposing the cut in a water scheme subsidy affecting farmers in the Malvern Hills and Oxford, and urging the Government to reintroduce the full subsidy “The Government indicated these subsidies would continue, and farmers went ahead with improvements. Now the Government has backed out. and farmers will have to find other financing,” said the provincial president (Mr P. G. Morrison). The representative for Oxford (Mr K. M. Wells) called the subsidy reduction “a complete breach of faith by the Government.” Farmers had understood that they would receive a dollar-for-dollar subsidy, and now had been notified that the subsidy for water schemes would be cut by 60 per cent.
