Top bowlers in Chch tourney

Although Canterbury has not reached the final of the Rothmans South Island indoor bowls fours tournament, today’s matches at Kearneys Road should still hold plenty of interest. The standard is likely to be high as a number of the country’s leading players will be appearing for Nelson, Greymouth, South Otago and South Canterbury. Each province will have A and B teams playing one hour matches and the total points awarded (two for a win, one for a draw) will decide which team

goes forward to the New Zealand final. Peter Brooks, the skip of one of the Greymouth teams, has Pat Botica playing second for him. Botica acted as the lead for Lloyd Bellis’s winning side at last week-end’s Canterbury triples. “Hori” Warnes, very experienced in top competition, will be skipping one of the Nelson teams. The skips, of the South Canterbury teams are Biil Ramage and Norma elements. Ramage was a well-known player in Canterbury before retiring to Geraldine and it was his new province which

nut paid to Canterbury’s hopes by eliminating Ray ■ Watkin and George Forrester at Timaru after two countbacks. Robert Botting should tackle his job as skip of one of the South Otago teams with some confidence as he is an experienced member of the A. S. Paterson Trophy team. Several members of the Canterbury indoor bowls team making their debut against North Otago at Oamaru this afternoon are in for a busy time. This fixture consists of two rounds (seven ends each) of fours pairs and

singles and five players — ■ Janette Lennon, Alan Straker, Darcy Hatsell, Betty Becker and George Forrester — will have an early start (8.30 a.m.) in the annual husband and wife pairs at Kearneys Road tomorrow morning. About 60 pairs of 180 entered should qualify for post-section play in the afternoon. Several prominent players will be in Australia during the tournament. These include Trevor Austin and Alf Williamson, who will be touring with the New Zealand team, and others who make up the party of supporters.
