New theory on beacon

iPA Wellingtor The Ministry of Transpor hopes to run more tests witf aircraft to test its theory ol the malfunction of the New lands beacon, at Wellingtor Airport. Apparently, radiation from nearby power lines may have caused the beacon to 'send a false signal to an Air New Zealand DQB indicating that the beacon was directly low the aircraft. A preliminary investigation after the event, last September, put the jet 3km north of the beacon. The DCS began its descent to Wellington Airport too early, and was only 60 metres above the houses in the mist and rain when the error was noticed. Air New Zealand suspended both the captain and the first officer of the plane from duty ’ for three months. . To test its theory, the de- . partment wants to mount an aircraft direction finder be- • neath a helicopter and carry out tests over the beacon. A report on the theory is being written, to assist a request for money for the tests. ■ lAn R.N.Z.A.F. helicopter will Iprobably be used.
