Appointments of women
Sir, — When Miss Dewe suggests that it is difficult to find women with appropriate qualifications and skills for national boards and commissions she is adopting a male society’s opinion of appropriate qualifications and skills — an opinion based on achievement in industrial, managerial and professional areas.
Motherhood in our society is idealised but accorded very low status. There are many women with qualifications and skills in areas such as home management, child rearing, and community work but these are not considered appropriate when appointments are being made. Women’s careers outside the home are handicapped, not advanced, by time spent in childrearing and, as a result, the Government has difficulty in finding women qualified in their terms. — Yours, etc., ALISON NEALE.
