Pool purifiers
Sir, — Your article, “Dangers in use of pool purifier” gives a timely warning of the dangers associated with handling calcium hypochlorite for use in swimming pools. A further danger, probably closer to most people’s experience, is the hazard associated with fire risks of hypochlorite stored in plastic containers. Experiments carried out by us in association with local fire prevention officers showed that a cigarette end dropped into a plastic container of a popular brand of hypochlorite, sold for use in home swimming pools, caused a violent conflagration. Users of such chemicals are warned never to smoke while handling chemicals such as these. — Yours, etc., N. J. PEET. Senior lecturer in chemical engineering. August 12, 1976.
