Car parking in Hagley Park
Sir, —I read with some concern an article in “The Press” of possible plans for allowing a car park in Haglev Park opposite the Christchurch Public Hospital. Surely there are more than enough car parks in Hagley Park without allowing more to ruin the peace and tranquillity of the place. Oi. o* ' has to look at the five av. ilable parking areas to realise the damage that has already been done. This is particularly true of the parking area under the trees opposite the tea kiosk where a previously pleasant spot is now marred by the noise and fumes from the ever present motor vehicles. After seeing the effect of the other car parks I have great difficulty in understanding Cr Burn when he states That he would like to see "a virtual wasteland” i.e. part of Haglev Park turned into something useful such as a car park.—Yours, etc., W. H. SWALLOW. August 11, 1976.
