Indian poverty

Sir,—Glenn Haszard’s article is headed “India: rich get richer, poor remain poor.” Is this peculiar to India? “Richer” and “poor” are relative terms. Rich nations become richer, poor nations remain poor. Rich people in every country seemingly become richer while the poor remain poor. In India the disparity is particularly high, and the poor are particularly poor and the situation particularly sickening. Man has to have a change of heart and get off the treadmill to which he seems at present bound before things will really change. But who listens to the prophets? Who are the prophets? And who or which nation will make the first vital move towards real change before we end up with catastrophe? Until then, we are like people throwi tg stones in glass-houses. — Yours, etc.,

G. C. SUGGATE. August 11, 1976.
