Nemery's powers trimmed

NZPA-Reuter Tripol Ihe Sudanese President (Jaafer Nemery) has been stripped of most of his political and military powers, the Arab Revolution News Agency reports.

The agency said the Sudanese Political Bureau, had named Mr Al-Rashid El-1 aher Bakr as Prime Minister, General Bashir Muhammed Ali as Defence Minister and Chief of the /Mined Forces, and General Muhammed Usman Hashin as Chief of Staff. President Nemery held all these posts previously. The agency said the charges were apparently to strip President Nemery of his absolute dictatorial authority, and were a confession of his failure to respond to the legal demands and ambitions of the masses in Sudan.

Nemery, aged 47, seized power in a military coup in Maj , 19fi9, took over as Prime Minister in October of that year, and became the first elected President in 1971.
