Fast trial by Twain
Special Correspondent Palmerston North
Twain took the time honours on very heavy ground at Awapuni yesterday morning when he ran a pleasing trial in preparation for the Newth Handicap at Foxton. Twain galloped with Gavade. and their trial must give both horses chances in the T.A.B. quinella race. Twain showed much promise last season. He has not raced since January so in all probability he will benefit from Saturday's race, though yesterday’s effort could do little else but improve his chances.
Working wide out on the course proper where anything better than 15sec to the 200 m was good. Twain beat Gavade by a length over 800 m in 55sec. the last 600 m in 4!sec. Peter Harris will ride Twain on Saturday and Bill Skelton is on Gavade, which is also ready for a bold run in the Newth. He is not. the best of track workers at any time and he has thrived since running second to Her Fancy at Wanganui In June. Guido jumped four hurdles well then ran 1200 m in Imin 25.45ec. the last 60(hn with
Brando which won the gallop easily. Brando took 4l.4scc for his final 600 m. He is promising and a bold first up run at Fox-
ton would not surprise . judging by his work. Cook SI rail and Sukkie Boy covered 800 m in 55.65ec, the last 600 m in 41 sec. I’hey worked when the ground was well churned up. Cook Strait shows promise. She is a half-sister to Marcbello and Marenostro. Waggon Belle was kept to three-quarter pace in the ground when running 800 m and Inishmore took 4 4.sec for the last
600 m of an easy 1600 m. Royal Piper and Lucerne required imin 31 4ser for 1200 m in pre-
paration fcr jumping races at Foxton.
Maintain and Gay Chief ran their 1600 m in 2min 3sec, the
last 600 m in 46sec. MIGHTY MERIT FIT
Mighty Merit and High Order worked over a round, the last 600 m in 44sec. Mighty Merit is at peak fitness after running fourth al Marton last month.
Royal Rent and Lufthansa took their time in working over IODOin in Imin 13.6 sec. the last 600 m in 44.65ec. Purple Penny!
i was timed 800 m hr 58sec, the ■ last 600 m in 43sec. He would be : an outside maiden chance at Fox ton as he probably needed
his outing at Hastings last week. Peace Train ran an easy 1000 m and took 44sec for his last 600 m. He won easily at Hastings and might go on with it. Sovereign Cloud beat Mr Bhutto over 300 m in 57.45ee, the last 600 m in 42.4 sec. Sovereign Cloud has shown swift improvement lately. She might go pretty well in the second division of the Awahou Maiden. Beau Chevalier was better than
Koiro Kurt after running 1400 m in Imin 43.65ec. the last 600 m in 43sec. Beau Chevalier was
quite impressive again. Red Sky ran an easy 600 m on
the plough in 39sec and Falla took 42.25ec. She has drawn
wide at Foxton but will still be hard to beat. Ladian and Step In Line jumped the steeplechase fences in the oval and gave a useful display. Archippus was given a light task. He came through Wednesday’s race at Hastings pretty well though lack of a recent race combined’with the heavy ground beat him. He is starting at Foxton and should do better.
