New fish outlet in Greymouth
Staff reporter Greymouth Two Greymouth fishermen have launched a $lOO,OOO enterprise that will entail an export fishpacking plant and a retail outlet in Greymouth. The men, Messrs Tom Fishburn and John Buchanan, said that the export packing plant would be the most up-to-date in the area, and plans for it had been altered recently to bring it up to health standards which would not be introduced until late next year. They will obtain their fish supplies from the five boats they run and will buy from other fishermen. Messrs Fishbum and Buchanan said that they planned to pay a set price for fish at all times. The
price would not be subject to market fluctuations. The fish would be packed and taken directly from Greymouth in refrigerated transport to other ports and loaded on overseas-bound vessels. Markets had already been arranged, and prospects were extremely promising. “If Greymouth had a bigger port, we might have been able to ship directly overseas from here,” said Mr Buchanan. On the retail side, the men, who are working under the name of the Crescent City Fishing Company — Crescent City being Greymouth’s original name — have purchased the long-standing Dainty Delicatessen in Albert Street. The shop is being reconstructed.
