NZPA-Reuter Washington Unless the issue of Americans still listed as missing in South-East Asia was resolved, no further progress in establishing relations between the United States and Vietnam was possible, President Ford said on Saturday. Mr Ford told the National League of Families of Prisoners and Missing Americans in South-East Asia that his Administration was employing “every effective means to account for your loved ones.” He promised that those efforts would continue, but cautioned that information
for every missing man might never be available. “We are dealing with a Government that has shown very little concern for your feelings,” the President said. He said the United States had exchanged messages with the Vietnamese indicating “our willingness to discuss differences.” “But,” he added, “without a satisfactory solution of the M.I.A. (missing in action) issue, no further progress in our relations is possible.” More than 900 Americans still are listed as prisoners or missing in action in South-East Asia. “Let me emphasise . . this is a firm, unequivocal commitment,” he added. “It’s still a very active commitment . . . it’s a personal commitment.”
