Yachtsman missing

PA Auckland A well-known Auckland yachtsman, Basil Stallard, who took his family around the world in a 38-foot sloop about six years ago and was shipwrecked on Rotuma Island, near Fiji, is overdue on a voyage to Auckland from Lord Howe Island. Ships and aircraft have been asked to watch for Mr Stallard, aged 66, who left Lord Howe Island on July 8 on a single-handed voyage in his sloop Mapu.

He left the Bay of Islands in March for Lord Howe Island, and friends say he expected to make the return trip in about 15 days.

A Search and Rescue Organisation spokesman at Wellington said that their had been depression after depression almost continually since he left. But his 11-year-old craft is believed to be wellfound, and he is an experienced yachtsman.
