Contractor chided
New Zealanders tend not to recognise the quality of locally manufactured goods, according to the director of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr I. D. Howell). He was commenting on a statement by the president of the Contractors’ Federation (Mr W. D. Finnie), that the Government import controls were fostering the manufacture of inferior quality 'bull-
dozer blades. Mr Finnie had said that such blades were being manufactured at “twice the price for half the quality.”
“If the line taken by the federation were continued,” said Mr Howell. “New Zealand could best be served by the Government accepting contracts from South East Asia.
“These contractors, with their own people, could do the job at twice the speed for half the cost.” He said that bulldozer blades manufactured in this country were made to the original tractor makers' specifications.
“It would serve the injterests of both parties, and [the country, if Mr Finnie pullled with the manufacturers land not against them. Our interests are the same in the pong run — continuity of (work, increasing stability, and a better standard of livdng.” 1
