Hayes’ top seeding justified?

Rod Hayes will have to show an improvement in his recent form to justify his top seeding for the Wigram open squash tournaipent over the next three days. The 19-year-old Christchurch club player has been attacking freely in recent games but this admirable habit has not always paid dividends when a more solid brand of squash was required. Barry McNeil, (High School Old Boys) seeded second, beat Hayes in a tough five-setter recently and will make things tough for his much younger opponent if he maintains his current sharpness. Also in with a good chance is the up-and-down High School Old Boys player, Lawrence Skurr, who has the ability to beat anybody in the province.

The other seed is Bruce Trangmar (Christchurch) who replaces the young Canterbury representative, Paul McFadzien (out with an injured back) in the No. 4 spot. Ros Stanton (High School Old Boys) should add yet another title to her large collection in the women’s section but a Merle Holland (Sumner) at her best would extend the 21-year-old.

The other two seeds are Margaret Steele (Old BoysSuburbs) playing some pleasing squash recently, and Bette King (Old Boys). Kathy Graham, the Canterbury No. 2, did not enter.
