Prison term extended for theft
A youth with a “deplorable” record was sentenced to two months imprisonment by Mr Justice Casey in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of stealing a cassette recorder, the property of Allan George Barnes. The term is to be added to the sentence of six months that Brent Rory Coulston, aged 19, a workman, is serving at present. He pleaded guilty to the charge on arraignment. Mr P. H. B. Hall said that it was conceded that Coulston had had a lamentable record for a youth of 19, but the offence had occurred when he was experimenting with drugs and associating with bad company.
Counsel submitted that a concurrent sentence should be imposed. Coulston’s girlfriend was expecting his child about October and he wanted to marry her and settle down, Mr Hall said.
His Honour said that, for a young man, Couston had a deplorable record and if he continued in this way he woud spend most of the rest of his life behind bars. He had failed to take advantage of leniency granted to him in the past.
