Bombs hit resort

NZPA-Reuter Belfast A wave of bombs has blasted the centre of the Ulster seaside resort, of Portrush, packed with thousands from Belfast enjoying a holiday away from daily violence. All eight bombs appeared to have been packed in duffle bags before they were planted. One destroyed Northern Ireland’s biggest amusement arcade, and the others gutted two cafes, three coffee shops, a record shop, two cake shops, and al veterans’ club.

Warnings had apparently been received as the police had gone on full alert and buildings in the city centre had h een evacuated.

There were no reported injuries. Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the first on Portrush, but suspicion fell on the Irish Republican Army, waging a guerrilla war against British rule. Unlike such heavily-pat-rolled and guarded cities as Belfast and Londonderry, Portrush, on the northern coast 5 n miles from Belfast, is a “soft” target.
