Tine writing’ on conservation
PA Wellington The first prize in the Reed Literary Award, sponsored by the Reed Trust, has gone to Noel Holmes, of Auckland. The winners of the award were announced at the opening of National Conservation. Week in Wellington on Saturday. Mr Holmes won the first prize of $l5O for the best articles on conservation published in New Zealand over the last 12 months. Merit awards of <sso were won by Guy Salmon (Nelson), and Gordon Chesterman (Hamilton). Because of the “uniformly
high standard” of the entries, the judges decided to add a “highly commended” category, and book prizes were awarded to Warwick Roger, of Wellington, and David Mitchell, of Diamond Harbour. The three judges were the editor of the “Listener” (Mr lan Cross), the secretary of the Press Council (Mr Ken Poulton), and the chairman of the Nature Conservation Council (Sir Robert Falla). Topics ranged from coverage of environmental problems in small communities, to an analysis of key factors in national issues.
