Catholics call for new order
NZPA-Reuter Philadelphia Roman Catholic leaders from Europe, America, and Africa have called for a new international order to alleviate poverty and hunger in the Third World. Addressing the 41sti Eucharistic Congress, in j Philadelphia, representing the world’s 683 million Roman Catholics, Bishop James Sangu of Mbeya in Tanzania declared yesterday that no amount of aid could banish poverty from the earth. "A poor man is not helped much by a piece of bread,” he declared, “but only by giving him the chance’ and opportunity to make his own living.” The bishop’s call was echoed by the head of the Church’s Jesuit order, Supe-rior-general Pedro Arrupe.
