Quinella bets off course

Bettors at T.A.B. offices connected to the computer will be able to place quinella bets on the last race at the three galloping meetings to be held on Saturdav up to 30 minutes before the starting time of each event.

The Avonhead Handicap will be the quinella race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting on Saturday. The T.A.B. does not envisage any delay in the posting of dividends for the off-course quinella races, said a spokesman yesterday.

“As soon as the race finishes the T.A.B. represensative on the course will advise head office of tile horses involved in the quinella and almost immediately the number of units on the successful combination will be available. “These should be on the course by the time placings become official, and the totalisator operator should be able to calculate his dividend just as quickly as if there had

been no off-course betting on the quinella,” he said. Starting on Saturday, betting will close later at distant agencies not connected to the computer. Win and place bets will be able to be made up to 50 minutets before the start of each race, while doubles and trebles can be made up to 70 minutes before the starting time of the first leg.
