Miller top player in club badminton
Geoff Miller (Railway 1) was the most successful player in this season’s A grade badminton competition. He contested all 12 rounds and was unbeaten in singles and, with Jim Lang, in men’s doubles. His solitary loss was a mixed doubles — his partner was Pat Duckmanton — early in the season. They were beaten in interclub play for the first time in two years by North Beach’s Peter Whiting and Alison Ross.
Glenys Waller also contributed greatly to Railway I’s championship success by winning her 10 singles matches. She was also unbeaten in mixed doubles, partnered by Lang. Janet Miles and Sandra Chapman (Knox) compiled a proud women’s doubles record, losing only once in
12 matches. Their two wins over Mrs Waller and Mrs Duckmanton were both major achievements. Miss Miles and Brent Wilson (Canterbury 1) were the most successful No. 2 singles players. Miss
Miles won 11 of her 12matches and Wilson was beaten just the once, although it might be said that both these players should really have been No. Is.
Wilson, who is the most promising of Canterbury’s younger players, had an uneven season, mainly because he was troubled for some weeks by an eye ailment. However, his form in the last few rounds was very good and he could be a threat at the coming Canterbury championships. Warren Edgecumbe (Knox) was beaten only twice in singles — both times by Miller — and Mrs Duckmanton and Diane Erikson (North Beach 1) also suffered only two defeats, although the latter missed two rounds. Terri Perry (Railway 11), with three losses, led the remainder.
