3 medals for canoeist
NZPA-Reuter Montreal
Rudi Helm, of East Germany, a cheerful 19-year-old schoolboy, paddled his way into the Olympic record books on Saturday, by becoming the first person to
win three Olympic .canoeing medals.
But Helm’s gritty performance in adding a gold in the 1000-metre kayak singles and a bronze in the kayak fours to the 500-metre singles bronze he collected on Friday, could not prevent Russia from matching its 1972 haul of six gold medals in canoeing.
The Soviet canoeists took six gold and three silver medals from 11 events in Montreal.
Russia also produced the only double gold medallists on the regatta, Sergej Petrenko and Aleksandr Binogradov, who added the Canadian 1000-metre pairs gold to the one they collected in the 500-metre on Friday. They were so delighted with their double victory that they tumbled out of their canoe after crossing the line and had to swim to the victory ceremony.
