Award will take violinist home
An Italian-born musician who has been 10 years in New Zealand has won an award that has taken him back to Italy. Franco Domaneschi, sub-principal second violinist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, won the orchestra’s study award for 1976.
During his award period Mr Domaneschi is studying with two famous violinists who recently visited New Zealand, and also with one of his former teachers, says a statement from the orchestra.
Mr Domaneschi was recruited for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (then the N.Z.B.C. Orchestra) in 1965, when Juan Matteucci, then principal conductor, was in Italy.
He studied in Rome intil last week with Felix Ayo, who visited New Zealand last year as a mem-
ber of the Beethoven Quartet of Rome.
This week, Mr Doman : ‘ eschi will move to Geneva for a period at the Geneva Conservatorium under' Henryk Sderyng. This was arranged when the famous violinist was in New Zealand in April.
Later, he will study with Bruno Salvi, one of his former teachers who is now a leader of the orchestra at La Scala Opera in Milan. Between these courses, Mr Domaneschi hopes to attend various festivals and generally to hear as much music as possible. He wilt return to the N.Z.S.O. uf October.
This annual study awai4 to members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra began in 1964. and has continued under the auspices of Radio New Zealand.
