New body ‘advisor’ to Govt
PA Wellington The Communications Commission established by the Government will act in an advisory role, and will in no way take over the telecommunications procedures and activities of the Post Office. This assurance was given by the Postmaster General (Mr Templeton) in an address at the opening of the Post Office Association’s annual conference in Wellington on Sunday.
“The commission has now been formed, and its personnel have begun work,” he said. The commission covered several departments, and was designed to give the Government a broad view of telecommunications.
Mr Templeton said the loss to the Post Office Savings Bank of the direct crediting monopoly of social benefits presented a challenge. This, along with the national superannuation benefit, would now have to be shared with other banks.
“The change highlights the need for continued effort on the part of the Post Office to maintain its position as a kev savings institution,” he said. I
