Robbery attempt ends in flight
Two young men who attempted to rob a Christchurch shop yesterday ran off when the proprietor refused to hand over any money. Both men were arrested soon after, and charged with attempted robbery. They will appear in the Magistrate's Court today. The men walked into the Fair Dea! second-hand shop, at 269 Manchester Street, about 1.45 p.m. One threatened the proprietor. Mr A. L. Mardon, and demanded money, while his companion
waited in the background. Mr Mardon refused to hand over any cash from the till, and the would-be robbers ran off. One was picked up minutes later in Manchester Street by a police patrol, and the other was arrested in a city hotel about 3 p.m. One of the men had given the impression that he was carrying a weapon under his coat, but neither had been armed, said the officer in charge of the inquiry (Detective SeniorSergeant R. Meikle).
