Tunnel revenue

Lyttelton’s mini trade boom has resulted in substantial increases in revenue for the Christchurch-Lyttel-ton Road Tunnel Authority during June, compared with the same period last year. The lota) revenue for June was up 10 per cent on last year Over 8000 tonnes of logs and phosphate were trucked through the tunnel during June, as well as more than 5000 tonnes of gypsum and bulk barley. Vehicle counts showed an increase of 15.1 per cent in commercial traffic, though car traffic increased only a modest 2.5 per cent. The authority’s chairman (Mr V. G. Spiller) said yesterday that figures for July were showing a similar trend with car traffic up 0.4 per cent and truck traffic up 16.3 pei cent. Mr Spiller said that for the year ended March 31, 1976, total tunnel revenue decreased by 7 per cent. A substantial drop in goods tonnage of 18.6 per cent was the primary cause, he said, thougn this was offset slightly by a very minor increase in car traffic of 0.03 per cent. This is the only year a drop in traffic numbers has been recorded since the tunnel was opened in 1964, apart from a minor drop of 1.7 per cent in 1968, he said. ARRIVALS Marasumi Maru (5.4 a.m.),
