Big, new pharmacy
A pharmacy established in Merivale more than 60 years ago has moved into bright new premises as part of a general move by businessmen in the area to further develop the Merivale shopping centre. The pharmacy started business as D. S. Dodds, Ltd in 1912 in smaller premises adjacent to the new shop. The name was later changed to Dodds Pharmacy, Ltd. The present partners in the business are Messrs A. N. R. Wallace and P. R. Cooke The new pharmacy is a two-storey building with a floor area of about 7000 square feet. The shop is on the ground floor, while the upper floor is occupied by a doctor, a dental surgeon and a branch of an insurance company.
The pharmacy offers a good range of products and services. It has a greater than usual range of cosmetics, toiletries, leatherware and gift lines. It also has a large, well stocked dispensary, with comfortable seating for customers who wish to wait for prescriptions. The dispensary is the focal point of the shop, and probably quite rightly so from the pharmacy’s point of view. Dodds are said to have dispensed more than one million prescriptions since the business started. Mr Wallace says that he is now serving third generation families. But dispensing is not the only side of the business. Dodds have a complete photographic service and
i will advise customers on 1 any other needs. The pharm- ■ acy also has a chiropodist - in attendance every Thurs- - day afternoon (Thursday is > also the late shopping day). 1 The staff in the shop are helpful and well trained. > Other than the two part- ■ ners, there are 11 staff, four; of them in the dispensary.
