Report on gallery land use sought
An environmental report should be prepared to support a future application to use part of ’the Botanic Gardens for ■a Robert McDougall Art jGallery extension, the City Council cultural (committee chairman (Cr iMelen Garrett) said yes- ; terday.
Before such an extension could be built, the Minister of Lands would have to approve it. That approval was needed before an architect could be chosen, Cr Garrett said. But some councillors questioned how the Minister :of Lands could make a decision without an architectural sketch before him. Cr David CaygiU said the
question should be referred to the Minister first "instead of trying to second-guess him" Cr Garrett said she was only acting on the advice of the New Zealand Institute of Architects Ct Peter Blaxall asked .how an environmental report could be made "on •-■ rnething that is only an idea." before architectural plans are obtained Cr Garrett had recommended that the parks and ■ recreation committee- chairjman (Cr Peter Skellerup) be added to the sub-committee ito select an architect, but Cr jskellerup declined She realised that he was ."fundamentally opposed' to ihe project.
