Drug centre funds call

PA Rotorua 1 The National Party Conference endorsed a remit [calling on the Government to provide funds for provincial drug-addiction centre trusts. The Minister [of Justice (Mr Thomson) spoke in favour of it. The remit was presented bv Miss S. Sissan. of the Hastings Young Nationals, who said drug addiction was “sky-rocketing.” In 1972. she said, there were an estimated 200 drug addicts in New Zealand, but now there were 200 in Hawke's Bav alone. She said the centres should be open and voluntary, with complete immunity from the law, and that Government (funds should be provided for them.

Mr Thomson urged full support for the remit, and said the Government was concerned about addiction.
