Award to C.W.I.

PA Wellington In appreciation of a donation of S9OOU to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of New Zealand, the National Federation of Country Women’s Institutes has been awarded a Certificate of Merit, it was announced at the organisation’s biennial conference. The certificate has been awarded only twice before in New Zealand. Included in the remits carried by the conference was one “that women protest more strongly to the Minister of Electricity (Mr Holland) against and plan to install nuclear power plants in New Zealand until all other sources of power have been investigated.” A remit “that the Government be urged to re-introduce orderbook payments of the Social

Welfare benefit” was carried by a large majority. The main complaints from delegates were that cheques were disappearing from mail boxes and the difficulties for some elderly people to know if payments had been missed, as there was no form of receipt to indicate if payment had been made. OFFICERS ELECTED Mrs H. N. Flynn, of Wanganui, . was re-elected national president unopposed. Officers elected to the executive committee were: Mesdames J. Calder (North Canterbury), R. Hood (Central Otago), S. Hutton (Waikato), M. D. Innes (North Otago). B. Knox (Waikato East), M. D. Richardson (Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay), J. Robertson (North Auckland), and J. Miley (North Hawkes Bay).
