Auckland Maoris support boycott
PA Auckland The Auckland District Maori Council supports the African withdrawal from the Olympics. In a telegram to the president of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (Mr Abraham Ordia) the chairman of the Auckland Maori Council (Dr Rangi Walker) expressed sympathy with the black athletes. In reply, Mr Ordia said, “All Africa is touched by your warm message of sympathy and encouragement. No sacrifice is too great in
defence of human dignity.” Dr Walker said yesterday that the whole of the African continent was boycotting the Games, in an attempt to dramatise the oppression of black people in Africa and South Africa. “The Africans had tried dialogue with New Zealand to show its plight, but we had not listened. They sent over Mr Ordia, but again we failed to listen.” Dr Walker said the council had decided to endorse the boycott because of the fight for the liberation of black people and the attainment of equal rights.
