No local policeman
A request by the Walmairi County Council that the once-familiar neighbourhood policeman be reintroduced has been temporarily declined by the head of the Christchurch police district (Chief Superintendent G. E. Twentyman) because of a staff shortage.
The council wrote to Mr Twentyman last month seeking his views about installing a constable at Belfast and other areas of the county. The council said that several ratepayers sought this.
Mr Twentyrnan told the council this week that the police already had two
constables working as “communitj- liaison officers” in the BishopdalePapanui and Riccarton areas. It was planned to make further such appointments when staff increases were authorised.
Larger urban areas were without such a service, he said. More staff would follow urban growth.
Cr J. B. Russ said that the council apparently had not been “getting at the right people.” The meeting decided that the issue should be raised with the Minister of Police (Mr McCready) and the Commissioner of Police (Mr K. B. Burnside).
