Summit Road ban wanted

There should be a prohibition on the building of houses on the Port Hills when access would be by the Summit Road, according to the County Regional Planning Authority. The authority’s regional planner, Mr F. S. Robinson, made this submission at the Paparua County Council town planning hearings yesterday. He said the Summit Road Protection Act prevented building on land

protected under the act to preserve the road’s scenery, but there was no ban on access to land along the road, and buildings could be put on land just outside the protected zone.

The authority was supported by the Summit Road Scenic Society, which said the protected zone was far too small. Access would open the way for subdivision, when efforts were being made to create a wider park reserve.
