VERNE NOVEL
“Journey to the Centre of the Earth,” Jules Verne’s immortal novel, comes to television in a 1960 interpretation of the journey ever downwards to the lost city of Atlantis. The adaptation for screen was done by Charles Brackett and Walter Reisch.
James Mason plays the earnest professor and Arlene Dahl a Victorian lady who, true to character, makes tea several miles down. Others in the cast are Pat Boone and Dianne Baker.
Perhaps, the real star of this fanciful tale is the 20th Century Fox special effects department which
developed some fascinating trick camera work and scenery. The photography was done by Leo Tover. The story is exciting and nerve-racking but also has moments of welcome comedy relief.
This film was the "All Time Top Domestic BoxOffice Grosser,” of 1960. earning $5 million. Jules Verne's ageless yarn kept thousands of readers amused and enthralled in the late nineteenth century, and has been adapted to many other fields. "Journey to the Centre of the Earth” will be .screened by TVI on Saturday afternoon.
