New Chief of Defence Staff

PA Wellington The Chief of Defence Staff (Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Webb) will retire on October 15, and will be succeeded by Air Vice-Marshal R. B. Bolt, the present Chief of Air Staff. The change in New Zealand’s top military post was announced yesterday by the Minister of Defence (Mr McCready). Air Vice-Marshal Bolt joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1942, and served with the Royal Air Force during the war. Since then his appointments have included command of transport squadrons in the R.N.Z.A.F. and the R.A.F. and command of the R.N.Z.A.F.’s Transport Wing. A graduate of the Imperial Defence College, he was appointed Air Officer Commanding the R.N.Z.A.F.’s Operations Group in 1969, Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Support) in 1971 and Chief of Air Staff in 1974. Air Vice-Marshal Bolt will be promoted to Air Marshal on his appointment, as Chief of Defence Staff.
