Aubrey and Regal Tan picks for Levin double

Special carres. Wellington Aubrey looks one of the more promising young winter gallopers to race in the Central Districts this year and if he goes on * with his lower-grade form he might win todav’s Levin Winter Cup, his first start in Class 1.

The lightly-framed gelding has won his last two starts, over 2060 metres at Wanganui early this month, then over 1600 m in Class 3 at Trentham 11 days ago. He carried 57.5 kg in bad ground at Trentham and won going away by a length and a quarter. Though he races in a higher grade today the company is generally no stronger than provincial and he should be up to it.

A son of the late Five Arrows, he shapes as if the 2220 metres will be within his range. He has been ridden in his last two starts by Gary’ Phillips, but Phillips has a commitment to Wild Irish and Bob Skelton takes the mount. Skelton has an excellent record on the track and won the 1975 Levin Winter Cup on Flight Tracer. Hunting Chief won last Saturday’s Winter Oats easily and will now concede Aubrey 3kg but should stilj be in the money. There has been no shortage of rain in Horowhenua recently and provided the going is loose he will be expected to reproduce his Trentham form. Maurice Campbell will ride him.

Guido was an improver’s fifth in the Winter Oats. He was ridden by Bill Skelton, but Skelton is on Arbor Prince today and the Robinson Stable apprentice, Dean Melton, a promising rider, will be on Guido. Guido’s 53.5 kg is not a prohibitive weight for a Harcourt Stakes winner. Heckle’s Choice is a strong possibility. He raced at Wanganui on July 6 and, in his second start, after a spell showed himself forward bv running second to Alwick over 1600 metres. He prefers this distance.

The field for the second leg, the Hatuma Lime, offers relatively little in form. Regal Tan has been racing honestly and is due to win again. This distance, 1400 metres, should suit him better than the Avondale 1200 which he tried at his last start. Brent Thomson will ride him. Marebello’s run at Trentham where he beat everything except his stablemate Marenostro, was impressive. He will not have a big track this time but if he runs on as well he will be one of the best chances. He will be ridden by his trainer, Maurice Campbell. The lightweight Surrey Park, like Aubrey and Regal Tan is a three-year-old showing ability in the mud. He may be the pick of the rest. He has won his last two starts in Classes 4 and 3. both easily. Bill Skelton rode him in both of them and will do so again. Ladv Primrose, one of the season’s best three-year-old fillies, is making an early start on her next campaign. She was spelled after running third in the Great Northern Oaks in April and so is some three months without a race. If she is forward and goes kindly for John Grylls there is a chance that she could give, five arrows the double. I The dav’s feature will be the last race for two-year-olds vtlth a stake of any size. It is the 1200 metre Rvder Stakes, which is worth SSGOO and as usual has drawn a good field of juveniles. . The latest smart arrival on the scene in this age

group, ip the Central Dis-n tricts at least, has been the j beautifully bred filly Silver Lining by Sovereign Edition from the brilliant Pakistan . II mare Ajasco. From three ' starts she has won twice in effortless style. In contrast to Silver Lining is the hard-wearing topweight, Secret Show. He has been around, though not continuously, since the first two-year-old race of the season. Another nev-_omer in this age group is Kilkenny, which is highly rated in the north. From the Takanini stable of Colin Jillings, he has had two starts and has won both. He is a colt by Azemann, and will be ridden by Brian Andrews.
