Cabinet walks out
NZPA-Reuter Lima The entire Peruvian Cabinet has resigned after a surprise announcement that the Prime Minister and Army commander (General Jorge Fernandez Maldonado) had resigned his post.
The Government information chief, General Jorge Villalobos, told reporters that all 17 Cabinet Ministers had submitted their resignations to President Francisco Morales Bermudez. No reasons were given for either the mass resignation or for that of the Prime Minister, which was announced on national television. All but one of the Ministers in the Cabinet are drawn from the armed forces, which have been .in power since 1968. General Fernandez Maldonado was known in the military Government, in which 'he was also War Minister, as an opponent of both Right-wing and Leftwing extremists.
