Auck. teams win squash

PA Palmerston North. As expected, Auckland completely dominated the inter-district teams event at the Air New Zealand national squash championships, which concluded in Palmerston North on Saturday. In the final rounds played late on Saturday, the Auckland men’s team easily defeated the second seeds,’ Waikato, winning all four

matches to take this year’s title. The team, led by the new New Zealand champion, Howard Broun, and fellow New Zealand team members, Neven Barbour, and Trevor Colyer, won the tie comfortably. Colyer, who did not have a happy tournament, was the only Aucklander extended in the last round, when he was taken to five sets by Waikato’s number three, Barry Hughes, before winning 9-4 in the fifth. In the other big last round match, Wellington also trounced its opposition, Canterbury, again recording four wins from four matches. In doing this, Wellington edged out Waikato for second place in the tournament, finishing on 12 points, with Waikato four points behind on eight. Shane O’Dwyer, for Wellington scored a good win over Canterbury's Lyn Sparks in three sets and Tony Naughton made amends for his surprise loss to Waikato’s Brian Barnett in the fourth round, when he beat the promising Canterbury junior, Rod Hayes, in four sets. with 18 points, Southern Districts finished second with 16, Bay of Plenty scored four and Hawke’s BayGisborne two. The Auckland women’s team repeated the success of the men when it scored a four match win over Well-

ington in the final round of its division. The two New Zealand champions in the Auckland side, Jenny Webster and Pam Buckingham, paved the way for the win, with both women coming through the teams event unbeaten.

Mrs Webster easily beat Wellington’s number one, Julie Hawkes, in three straight sets and Mrs Buckingham dropped just one set when she beat Kay Glenny, to seal the tie for Auckland. ) Bay of Plenty took the maximum 10 points from its ’ last round match with Can- ’ terburj’, giving it second 1 place overall.
