‘New boys’ speak out

The newly-elected member of Parliament is frequently starry-eyed, deeply imbued with loyalties, and almost overwhelmingly impressed with the pomp and dignity of Parliamentary occasions. Normally, he or she is easy to distinguish from the older members — possibly by an air of wonderment, •ometimes by an excess of crusading real which inevitably gives way to habit and convenience within the first year.
This time it is different The surge of new members which signalled the arrival of another National Government may well be made of sterner stuff. After the first three weeks of the session there is the usual hint of disillusionment, but matching this is the determination to "do something about it." The new members have seen and been part of what is a shocking new development in the New Zealand
