Meat action averted

PA Wellington An agreement between the Freezing Companies’ Association and the Freezing Workers’ Union to hold talks on their dispute about the export of meat has forestalled industrial action to have begun on Monday. Representatives from the association and the union met iin Christchurch yesterday and they agreed to meet in Wellington next Wednesdav and Thursday in pre-conciliation talks to discuss major issues in the freezing industry. The Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) has agreed to appoint a chairman for this meeting. In addition to removing all bans on the loading of export meat the union has also agreed to lift the ban on experimental work on mutton chains from Wednesday. If there was progress made in the pre-conciliation meeting between unions and employers, the immediate possibility of a ban would be removed, said the national secretary of the Meatworkers’ Union (Mr F. E. McNulty).
