Jon Neilson celebrates his birthday on the opening day of the 1976 Olympics — “the bt it birthday’ present I’ve ever had.” he

says. From a Hawke’s Bay farming background but educated in Christchurch, Jon joined the N.Z.B.C. in 1966 after a stint as a school teacher, bed and bedding salesman (in London) and public relations man.

He joined initially as an announcer in Masterton, but was soon giving rugby and cricket commentaries, transferring to the sports section in 1969. Tn 1971, he went in Christchurch for two ; years and in 1974 moved to television full-time. He covered both the Commonwealth iiames and New Zealand Games and ; has been fronting TVl’s ; “Sports Extra” programme on Saturday mornings. Jon sees himself as a link man promoting sports and sportsmen. He has what he calls can “idealist’s view of sport” and has strong feelings about the Olympic concept ’! where, he says, “people from every country in the worid can meet ah_ comI plete without resorting to I killing each other.” | He will be covering rowing, i canoeing and gymnastics at I the Games.
