Warding on cables
Fishing trawlers have been warned by the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport to beware of submarine cables in the Marlborough Sounds. A special marine notice has been issued by the Ministry with details of the 20 cables in the area. “Most of these cables are telephone cables which maintain essential communication links within the Sounds area,” the notice said. “Without these cables, many people and essential services are seriously inconvenienced.” Commander F. W. Hunt of the Ministry’s Marine Division said today that the notice was issued to warn fishing trawlers and pleasure craft of the cables which could easily be damaged by trawling in bad weather.
